The chip clip provides the easiest and
most direct method for attaching to a surface mounted
serial eeprom. The clip contains 8 individual brass
points which contact the eeprom leads once the clip is
oriented and released. The spring loaded mechanism holds
the clip firmly in place. A red dot indicates pin 1 on
the part to assist in proper orientation. In order for
the clip to function properly, the eeprom leads must be
clean and there must be sufficient clearance between the
package and the board for the jaw mechanism to attach.

The standard surface mount probe set (below) provides a
positive lock connection to each pin of a surface mounted
serial eeprom or 68HC05/08/11 family microcontroller.
Using a micro pincher jaw, the probe tip is able to be
placed in position to make a reliable contact with the
device lead. Even if the device lead has contamination or
protective residue, the probe tip is usually capable of
penetrating the barrier and making contact with the
underlying metal lead. This arrangement is an excellent
complement to the clip for chips in hard to reach
locations or which have interference from nearby
components. Each probe is color coded (brown through
gray) which correspond to the EIA (Electronics Industry
Association) colors which reference the numbers 1 through
8. This makes connecting the probes to an 8 pin device
intuitive and easy. For ultra small package connections you may wish to
consider the precision surface mount probe set.

| Both probe sets are compatible with
the in-circuit serial eeprom adapter (#ASERSM1) and the asychronous communication adapters (#ACOM1 or #ACOM2)
which supports the Motorola 68HC05/08/11 microcontroller
families. The probe sets attach to the ACOM1 or ACOM2 using a
standard terminator board (left). The standard terminator
also includes pin for insertion into a DIP socket
(center) or the ACOM1/2 adapter (right). Many
applications use both serial eeproms and a 68HC family
processors. The standard terminator allows a single probe
set to support both technology families. NOTE:
The standard terminator also allows the probe set and
clips to be used with third part programming equipment
however most third party programmers are not designed for
