| IN-CIRCUIT programming options for 8 pin
serial EEPROMs and Motorola 68HC05/08/11 Family

| In many circumstances it is
highly desirable to work with an 8 pin memory
device or Motorola 68HC05/08/11 family
microcontroller while it remains connected to the
printed circuit board. To accomplish this, the
programming instrument must not only generate the
proper algorithms capable of accessing the part,
but also be able to provide sufficient signal
drive current such that the existing circuitry on
the board does not interfere with reading and
programming the device. The EPROM+ socket pin
drivers use a push-pull output stage, which in
nearly all cases, are capable of driving pins on
a device while it remains soldered to the circuit
board assembly. |

| To address connecting to a
surface mount serial EEPROM
"in-circuit" we offer two options; the
"chip clip" (left) and the "probe
set" (right). Each offers specific
advantages depending upon the accessability and
condition of the device leads. Both connect to
the serial eeprom adapter (center) using a
standard terminator base. This allows you to
easily change the chip attachment mechanism
choosing either the clip or the probes. If you
are working with serial eeproms in an 8 pin DIP
package we also offer a DIP
CLIP which mates with the standard terminator
board. |

CHIP CLIP
| The chip clip provides the easiest and
most direct method for attaching to a surface mounted
serial eeprom. The clip contains 8 individual brass
points which contact the eeprom leads once the clip is
oriented and released. The spring loaded mechanism holds
the clip firmly in place. A red dot indicates pin 1 on
the part to assist in proper orientation. In order for
the clip to function properly, the eeprom leads must be
clean and there must be sufficient clearance between the
package and the board for the jaw mechanism to attach. |

DIP CLIP
| The 8 pin DIP clip provides a fast,
reliable connection to serial eeproms located in the
larger through-hole package. The clip contains 8
individual brass pins which contact the eeprom leads once
the clip is oriented and released. The spring loaded
mechanism holds the clip firmly in place. A red dot
indicates pin 1 on the part to assist in proper
orientation. In order for the clip to function properly,
the eeprom leads must be clean and there must be
sufficient clearance between the package and the board
for the jaw mechanism to attach. |

SURFACE MOUNT PROBE SET
| The surface mount probe set provides a
positive lock connection to each pin of a surface mounted
serial eeprom or 68HC05/08/11 family microcontroller.
Using a micro pincher jaw, the probe tip is able to be
placed in position to make a reliable contact with the
device lead. Even if the device lead has contamination or
protective residue, the probe tip is usually capable of
penetrating the barrier and making contact with the
underlying metal lead. This arrangement is an excellent
complement to the clip for chips in hard to reach
locations or which have interference from nearby
components. Each probe is color coded (brown through
gray) which correspond to the EIA (Electronics Industry
Association) colors which reference the numbers 1 through
8. This makes connecting the probes to an 8 pin device
intuitive and easy. |
| The probe set is compatible with both
the serial eeprom adapter (#ASEREE2) and the asychronous
communication adapters (#ACOM1 or #ACOM2) which supports
the Motorola 68HC05/08/11 microcontroller families. This
is made possible by using a standard terminator board
(left). The standard terminator includes connectors for
both the socket on the ASEREE2(center) and ACOM1/2(right)
adapter. Many applications use both serial eeproms and a
68HC family processors. The standard terminator allows a
single probe set to support both technology families. |
